Hosta

If you have a backyard that’s both dry AND shaded, then this plant is one of the few that will absolutely thrive in it. Developing to about 30 inches wide and 15 inches tall, a cluster of hostas is a great option to help you fill in the space if you have a low-light garden.

The fact of the matter is that most hostas actually prefer shade. And interestingly, the darker the plant, the more likely it is to flourish in a shady environment.

So if you’re looking for a low-maintenance plant for a shaded spot in your garden, hostas are the best choice. You can find them in all shades of green with blue, green with yellow, and green with white.

Once planted, this plant will grow cheerfully without needing any attention from you. The one downside to these lovely plants, however, is that rabbits, deer, and slugs will love them must as much as you do!

Hardiness: Zones 3-9

Planting: Full to partial shade

Care: Once plants finish blooming, be sure to cut off the remaining flower stalks. And if you feel like they’ve become too dense, divide the plants. Pro Tip: Need to keep out deer? Try spraying with a deer repellent or try encircling your beloved plants with some crushed eggshells to keep out slugs!
