August – Poppy & Gladiolus

The vibrant colors and paper-like blossoms of the poppy flowers have been embellishing flowerbeds and fields for centuries. They have signified remembrance and hope throughout history.

During ancient times, they were known to offer calming and healing effects. Nowadays, poppies are a symbol of peace with an underlying meaning of soldiers’ sacrifice, as they often grow on war-torn fields.

The other August flower is the gladiolus, one of the most lovely flowers out there. With their stunning pointe tips and striking blossoms, they are very popular in the late summer, blooming in a wide range of colors. The name “gladiolus” comes from the Latin “gladius,” meaning “sword.” The rough translation would be “sword lily.”

Generally, the gladiolus flower represents moral integrity, faithfulness, strength of character, and remembrance.
