6. Ficus (Ficus benjamina)
Ficus plants are finicky, but a well-grown ficus ranks among the pinnacles of indoor plants. Large, glossy, and spectacular, these tropical plants are well worth the effort. There are many ficus species that can be grown as houseplants, and although most are upright trees, varieties also include those with a weeping, climbing, shrubby, or creeping habit.
These tropical plants don’t like to be moved, and they drop their leaves in drafty, cold conditions. They require warmth, humidity, and adequate light. It’s important not to overwater your ficus plant. Do it regularly during the growing season, letting the soil dry out between watering sessions. Reduce water use in the fall through late winter.
You may find small white or yellow blossoms, but you should know this happens pretty rarely. Watch for pests such as mealybugs, thrips, spider mites, and aphids.
