Opt for open shelving over cabinetry.
Small kitchens with crowded wall units might put a damper on the idea of cabinetry in small spaces. However, well-built joinery might offer a slimline, less cluttered storage alternative to the open shelving so many prefer when it comes to sizeable rooms.
Well, as it turns out, this is one of those home decor rules that could be altered depending on your taste, and I personally find that beautiful. The integrated floor-to-ceiling cabinetry that’s also paired with open corner shelving might offer the best of both worlds without feeling like way too much in such a small space. Cabinets could give you the illusion of a bigger space, especially with glass and frosted doors, and that’s because they reflect natural light.
They also provide additional storage space, especially compared to open shelves. You can hide in the back all those items that aren’t super attractive and bring in your beautiful pieces in the front.
If you simply don’t have enough time to keep them tidy, open shelves might indicate a disorderly look. However, cabinets will offer the needed storage while concealing all the mess behind closed doors.
On top of that, cabinets might add a little bit of visual appeal to the room, especially if you’re open to experimenting with different colors, finishes, and styles. You might, for example, blend open and closed cabinets or even try mirrored cabinet doors. They will reflect the light but also foster the needed sense of space. Here’s my favorite choice of wood open shelves. They’re probably the only rustic ones you can find at such a good price.
