Gross bathroom smell

If your house has been smelling like a waste treatment plant, you could leak sewer gas containing toxic and potentially explosive components like hydrogen sulfide, which could cause eye irritation and unconsciousness, and methane, which can drain oxygen, leading to asphyxiation.

One leading cause for this home odor problem could be a bathroom that isn’t used too often. The pipes under a sink or shower include a U-shaped trap, holding a tiny amount of water that stops sewer gas from leaking back into your home.

This water could eventually evaporate if a bathroom isn’t used, allowing odors through. To fix the issue, pour a cup of water into the bathroom drain. For some added force, add a teaspoon of oil to stop the water from evaporating.

If you can’t find the source of your issue, the problem could be that a vent pipe, which takes sewer gas up and out through your roof, is clogged or broken.

In this case, call a home inspector or plumber to investigate the issue immediately.
