Install some simple shelves

If the space allows it, hanging a few shelves in an unused area of your closet can be a great way of optimizing closet space. Make the best use of your area.

By this, we mean that you can use a single shelf above the hanging rod or some vertical shelves in the corners.

Bulky items like pants and sweaters will take up much less space when they’re folded and put on shelves instead of hanging them on a rack.

And you’ll see everything much better, too, when all your stuff isn’t squished together on hangers. If you decide to install a tall shelving system, be sure to buy a small foldable step stool and keep it nearby for easier access.

Double your hanging space

What do you do when your closet is overflowing? Nothing revamps your wardrobe as dramatically and quickly as a double hang.

Having more hanging space is a perfect example of optimizing closet space and more efficient than using shelving, especially if you have too many clothes and insufficient closet space.

So, if you have to choose between the two, we recommend increasing your hanging space. Then, color code your closet for extra organizational gain.

Just keep in mind that this might mean that you have to hang the items you typically fold and stack.
