Declutter your clothes
Let’s begin with the most obvious way of optimizing closet space: Let go of things you don’t wear anymore. It will make a huge difference in your closet.
Set aside some time to pull everything out, sort it by category, and donate what you don’t wear anymore. If you haven’t worn something in over a year, chances are you won’t ever wear it again to justify taking up all that space on the rack.
Consider storing special occasion items, including sentimental t-shirts and fancy dresses, elsewhere, like in a guest room closet with extra space.
Go through everything, including bags, belts, and hats, to ensure every piece you put back into your wardrobe is something you genuinely love.
Use the floor of your closet
Think about it: It makes perfect sense to take the shoes you don’t wear often and keep them in your closet. Use the floor space for off-season accessories, storage, and especially shoes.
In our opinion, the best shoe storage option for the closet floor is a low-to-the-ground cubby. Just be sure to use one that fits to stretch out in every inch of your floor space.
You can also move your rarely-worn shoes either high up on a shelf in your closet, on your closet door, in a different storage space like a hall closet, or in the space under your bed.
But wherever you choose to store your shoes, remember to properly clean them so they don’t develop mildew or mold.
