Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, California but spent most of her childhood in a duplex apartment in West Berkeley. According to reports, neighbors were concerned about the traffic coming into the area that could disturb their way of life, which is why the efforts to landmark the duplex were abandoned.

During her teen years, Kamala Harris’s mother accepted a research and teaching offer in Montreal, where they relocated. She lived there until she attended Howard University and needed to move to Washington, DC.

Oakland Apartment

Harris began her law career working as a prosecutor in Alameda County. Her apartment from Oakland was a one-bedroom condo with beautiful big windows that provided views of Lake Merritt. The lake is a popular attraction being situated in the center of Oakland.

Harris bought the apartment with $116,000 and sold it in 1998 when she began working at the district attorney’s office in San Francisco.

San Francisco Apartmentent

The penthouse Harris owned in San Francisco was situated in the SoMa neighborhood. The penthouse occupied two floors and had a big bedroom, an incredible bath, a walk-through closet, and a double-height living space that included dining, living, and kitchen areas.

In 2021, when she knew, for sure, that she’d be spending most of her time in Washington, DC, Harris needed to say goodbye to her San Francisco apartment. She sold the apartment less than one month after being sworn in as the 49th vice president of the United States.

Even though the sales market wasn’t great at that time in San Francisco, Harris managed to sell her home for $799,000 and double her investment, considering that, back in 2004, she paid for the penthouse $489,000.

Brentwood Mansion

The official residence of the Vice President of the United States

The 19th-century Queen Anne-style house at Number One Observatory Circle has served as the residence of every vice president of the United States since Walter Mondale moved in there in 1977. The house is situated 2.5 miles away from the White House. It was originally built for the superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory, in 1893.

There are 33 rooms in total and 9,000 of square feet living area. Private rooms can be found upstairs and public spaces which are usually used for entertaining are on the main floor. Before moving in, Kamala Harris spoke to Sheila Bridges, a very talented designer who helped her achieve a home with her style. It was also a great opportunity to celebrate American design and work with small artisans.

In an interview for the Washington Post, Sheila Bridges said that the house needed to reflect her Californian sensibilities and a modern aesthetic. ” I wanted it to have a modern feel and lots of interesting details reflecting the vice president’s cultural heritage from India and Africa,” said Bridges.

The designer used pink wallpaper for the library’s walls, but the rest of the house features a neutral palette. The home’s circular turret chambers, inglenook fireplaces, wrap-around veranda, and heated pool are among its highlights.
