1. Maximize small spaces

You might not have as much space as someone who lives in a house, but don’t worry, there are many ways to achieve the look and comfort you want. With the right storage solutions, you can make every inch count.

Start by making the most of your vertical space: install wall-mounted shelves and hooks and maybe over-the-door organizers to keep things off the floor. When I lived in a one-bedroom apartment with my partner, we invested in multi-purpose furniture, such as ottomans with hidden compartments and a bed and couch with built-in drawers.

I love closet organizers for small spaces too, because they allow me to make the most of my shelves and hanger space without clutter. And don’t forget to do a closet cleanout at least once a year, so you don’t take up space for things you don’t wear anyway.

If your kitchen is small, hang your pots and pans to create a rustic look, or go for magnetic strips to store knives. As for your bathroom, I couldn’t recommend these baskets and bins enough. They keep your things in place, look good, and are affordable.

2. Furniture hacks

I don’t know about you, but I believe furniture can make or break the look of your home. If you want to transform your apartment within a budget, you need to read these hacks.

First of all, you don’t need to spend a fortune on stylish furniture. You can check local thrift stores, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace for unique, vintage pieces. In case they look like they need rescue, new hardware and upholstery and a fresh coat of paint are typically what they need to look their best again. For instance, you can upcycle a gorgeous chair by changing its upholstery and repainting it in a color that fits your style and decor.

If you’re crafty, you can try different DIY projects, such as building your own coffee table and shelves with budget-friendly wood and hairpin legs.

On the other hand, if you prefer to invest in new furniture, you can look for affordable options at places like IKEA, Amazon, or Walmart. Don’t forget to check out multiple online stores too, because you might be lucky to find a wonderful jam.

3. Decor pieces

As you can already tell, you don’t need a big budget to transform your apartment into the gorgeous space you deserve. You can start your makeover with some beautiful blankets and throw pillows in your favorite colors or patterns. These small accents will add coziness and texture and make your room look like it’s coming straight from a magazine.

If you have any rugs on the floors, make sure you keep them clean, because they add warmth and a pop of color in open-floor-plan apartments. The walls in your home deserve to be treated well too, so add a few DIY artworks, inexpensive art prints, or framed photos.

Other items I personally love are candles and string lights, thanks to their soft, ambient glow that instantly makes a space feel more comfortable. Don’t forget that thrift stores are full of hidden decor treasures that add warmth and personality to any space, so don’t miss out.

Another thing you can do to quickly transform your apartment is to swap out basic curtains or blinds for something patterned or colorful. It might not seem like much, but it makes the biggest difference.

4. Lighting is key

You probably know this by now, but good lighting can immediately transform your apartment, making it look more welcoming and larger. If you want to create the look of a lifetime, you can choose from many lighting sources—floor lamps, string lights, table lamps, or overheard lights—to add dimension and a cozy feel.

If your apartment is relatively small, opt for mounted light fixtures to free up table or floor space. You can also hang them from the ceiling to create a relaxing and warm look.

Don’t forget to add mirrors, because they reflect light and make the entire space look bigger and breezier. In case you have darker spaces, LED light strips are an amazing choice. They’re easy to install and can be attached under cabinets, along the walls, or inside your closet for extra glam.

5. Don’t forget about your balcony

If you’re lucky enough to have a patio or balcony, no matter the size, you’re going to love this tip. I’ve always dreamed of having my own balcony, even if it’s as tiny as a French one. Whether it’s a cozy little nook or a spacious retreat, there’s so much potential to make it your own slice of outdoor paradise.

First things first, you need cozy seating that won’t take up much room, such as a tiny bench or a chair that folds up. Add some throw pillows and outdoor rugs for an extra cozy feel without breaking the bank. I love to add a tiny coffee table to sip my drink, eat a snack, or do my makeup in the morning. You can make it even more special by adding some coffee table books there too. It would make you feel like you’re in a fancy hotel.

For a cozy nighttime glow, string lights or solar-powered lanterns should be your go-to. Your space can’t be completed without a little greenery, so think about putting tiny plants or herbs in containers. These small tweaks will turn your plain balcony into the most beautiful and tranquil retreat at home.
