If you were blessed with a gorgeous garden and you love colorful trees, you’re in for a treat, because I know a couple of plants that will make your space look like it’s coming straight from a fairytale.
I grew up in an apartment in the suburbs, and I dreamed that one day, when I have a family of my own and the financial resources, I will live in a house that has enough room for us, with a huge backyard that will allow me to plant a few colorful trees, a small vegetable patch, and maybe some flowers, and plenty of room for my children to play.
I just love waking up in the morning, making a cup of coffee, and then getting outside to relax, get energized for the day ahead, and admire my garden.
If you love the same things, I would say that planting these colorful trees was the smartest thing I’ve ever done because they make my space look joyful even on the gloomiest day.

But before we begin, I have to say that although many of them need a while to reach maturity, they look wonderful all year long, and that’s worth the wait. 1. Fringe tree
The fringe tree, scientifically known as Chionanthus virginicus, popularly known as “old man’s beard”, is a tiny shrub that looks fantastic when it blooms. They look wonderful all year, but they bloom when the outside is warm, filling your outdoor space with stunning fringe-like blooms.
If you’re curious about the fragrance, you’ll be delighted by its lilac-like smell, and if you like spending time in the garden in the evening or at night, you’ll be hypnotized by the wonderful aroma.
However, while having this colorful tree seems like a dream, you should know that it tends to spread wide and can grow up to 20 feet tall. We can say that its foliage is in tune with the season because it turns a golden yellow in the fall.
Another thing you should know about this colorful tree is that it can attract birds and wildlife that will feed on it, and it can also be a great shelter for some tiny animals.
These trees thrive in acidic soil, but they might not tolerate alkaline soils. They’re low-maintenance, so they’re great for busy people, and as long as they have moisture and the right pH, they’ll be happy. Don’t forget that while they don’t mind being planted in a place that’s partially shaded, they prefer to be in full sunlight.
2. Japanese tree lilac
Another colorful tree that will fill your garden with happiness is the Japanese tree lilac, which is also known as the giant tree lilac and is part of the olive family.
They can grow up to 30 to 50 feet tall and will impress you regardless of season because their fruits, flowers, leaves, and the texture and color of their bark are fantastic.

While they don’t mind shade, they prefer to be under sunlight, and the good news is that they’re resistant to pests, plenty of diseases, and some wildlife too, including deer.
3. Magnolia tree
One of my favorite colorful trees is magnolia, and I couldn’t see my dear garden without one. These flowers look fantastic all year, and the glossy green leaves are absolutely perfection.
You can find magnolia trees that are either evergreen or deciduous, and they’re both stunning. This depends on their growing zones, as some of them can maintain their green foliage throughout the seasons, while others will impress you with the changing color of the leaves, but the sad thing is that they will fall off in the fall.
This colorful tree likes both shade and sunlight, and it can grow from 15 to 80 feet. You have to be patient for these gorgeous magnolia trees to develop, but once they do, your breath will be taken away throughout the flowering seasons. If you want to beautify your backyard with them, make sure you plant these colorful trees in well-drained and moist soil with a pH lower than 7.
4. Dogwood tree
Another colorful tree that is going to turn your garden into one of the most beautiful ones in your neighborhood is the dogwood tree. They have gorgeous fall colors, lovely spring flowers, and pretty summer fruits.
Before you decide to plant one, you should know that they can grow bushy, short, or tall, depending on the species you want to have. Speaking of that, some species won’t grow more than 25 feet, while others can reach 40 feet when they mature.
You might notice that some dogwood species produce fruits known as drupes, and they’re not okay to be consumed by people or pets. The only ones who could indulge in those tiny fruits are birds and other animals.
Not only eating those fruits can cause you trouble, but touching them can too. Experts say that your skin can irritate if you touch the leaves and barks of dogwood trees, so you’d better do your research to see which species to plant in your garden.
These colorful trees can flourish in a variety of solid types, but the ideal one is a tad acidic and loamy. They love to be in full sunlight and sometimes in partial shade, especially when the weather gets out of control and there are too many degrees outside.

5. Eastern redbud tree
The last colorful tree on our list is the Eastern redbud tree, also known as the Judas tree. This one is going to turn your garden into the most gorgeous oasis, and what’s great is that the aroma and the colors of the blossoms will make you happy all year long.
When your fantastic eastern redbud tree matures, you’ll have the perfect shady spot to relax in the warm days of summer with a good book and a nice cup of coffee.
The spring is going to be that much nicer thanks to your colorful tree, which will bloom into a vibrant pink hue. Each session, you’ll have a new and exciting view, thanks to the fact that the color of the leaves changes from green to yellow, creating a visually captivating sight. Besides that, the leaves of these lovely trees are borne on a long, slender stalk and resemble hearts that are two to six inches in diameter.
Don’t expect to have giant trees in your home because they will grow to just around 30 feet high and 35 feet wide, making them quite small trees or shrubs. Unfortunately, redbud trees only survive for about 20 years before they die, and that’s because they can get sick and get plagued by pests.
