Q Can you tell us about what you do?
I’m Georgia Ezra, an interior architect and Director of Melbourne-based interior design practice GABBE and artisan tiles purveyors Tiles of Ezra.
My philosophy is simple – I am devoted to educating, motivating and inspiring others to create the most empowering, healthy and beautiful homes. I believe in crafting spaces that affect our senses, spirit and mood in such a way that our internal and spiritual heath is elevated.
I am a strong advocate that there is no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to interior design; just design unique to you – your design! Through my inspirational guides, worksheets, videos and lectures, I work to empower you to trust your unique aesthetic and to have fun creating the home you always desired.
Q Were you always interested in design and aesthetics? What led you to opening your own business?
From a young age I have always been interested in interior design. As a little girl I would find excitement in rearranging my friends’ rooms. I only worked in the industry for two years before launching GABBE – my interior design firm. I was looking for a change and was approached to provide interior design services for a property development company – before I knew it I was so busy I didn’t need to find work at a company and GABBE Interior Design was born.
Q Where do you draw inspiration for your work?
A treasure hunter and market-maven at heart, I search the globe for inspiration and resources from a range of exotic cultures, and I am experienced and passionate about pushing the boundaries of modern design and creating spaces that enlighten and inspire everyday.
Q We can see that you love to travel, what place do you feel most connected to as a designer?
I love exploring new places, however I find myself most inspired and comfortable in countries that elicit a really vibrant handmade and intriguing culture when it comes to art traditional fashion/clothing and interior products – tiles, fabrics etc. I spent a year in Valencia, Spain during my university degree and I can confidently say that I am connected to Spain in ways I have never felt before. I am, however connected to other countries such as Indonesia, India, Morocco, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico and Israel in similar ways. I love exotic markets and vibrant artisan work, I love handmade products that celebrate and sustain the culture of the country and craftsmanship in which it is made.
Q What’s your favourite part of what you do?
By far the most favourite part of any project is walking in to a finished space that you originally sketched on paper months beforehand. It is also seeing the positive reaction of the clients. I always reenergise myself when I receive positive excitement from my clients – it’s the reason why I work in this industry. I love to see the impact I have on my clients’ lives, and how I can assist in making their experience in their homes so much more rewarding. I believe that our homes are intrinsically connected to our emotional health and wellbeing and so when our homes are happy and healthy, so are we.
